I’ve been on a quest for the perfect vegan bacon for a long time and hadn’t been overly impressed until I came across THIS Isn’t Bacon.
I first saw THIS on Instagram, and after seeing videos of their products being cooked up, I was amazed. I am one of those vegans that loves a meat substitute. Just because I no longer want to eat animals doesn’t mean I should have to give up meals and snacks that are similar. If I can get a vegan version, I will try it!
I’ve tried some vegan bacon in the past and found it to be okay, but with a thin consistency that doesn’t live up to my bacon memories from long ago.
When trying THIS Isn’t Bacon, I knew this stuff was next level.
First of all, I love the packaging. Plain and simple, it says exactly what it’s all about. There’s a little peephole area too so you can see the product. Even when peeking through this, I was impressed and thought to myself, “this stuff looks proper!“
I opened up the packet and wow, the smell! I am so amazed when vegan products are similar to the real thing, but this smell was exact. It took me back to Saturday mornings at home, making bacon sarnies for brekkie with mates round.
I expected not to get a lot of product in the packet but there was a good amount of rashers, all of which had the perfect thickness and texture!
After cooking these in a little bit of oil, they were perfectly brown and slightly crisp – Exactly how I use to eat bacon in the pre-vegan days! I bunged it in a sarnie and boom – I was transported to another universe. I even tried using this bacon in a vegan carbonara and it was fantastic – my taste buds are tingling just thinking about it!
Along with having an amazing scent, the flavour and texture were stunning too. I really can’t believe how much this product smelt and tasted like real bacon. In terms of texture, this wasn’t an exact bacon replica but I was thankful for this. I remember bacon being fatty and chewy (unless burnt ‘n crispy), but THIS Isn’t Bacon was different. A meaty texture and thickness, the best bacon replacement I’ve tried!
If you’ve got your hands on THIS Isn’t Bacon, here’s some ideas of how you can use it:
- Bacon sarnies
- Mac and cheese with bacon on top
- Full English
- Brussels sprouts fried with chopped bacon and garlic (sounds strange but honestly it’s so amazing!)
- Cheese and bacon potato skins
- Pigs in blankets – I reckon this would work so well with Sainsbury’s Shroomdogs
- & so much more!
I am very much looking forward to trying more of the product range from THIS – I especially like the look of their Isn’t Chicken Goujons!
Have you tried any THIS products? Which would you recommend?
