“Vegan wine? Isn’t all wine vegan?” This is something I’ve had so many people ask me and if I’m honest, it’s something I knew nothing about until I went vegan.
Now, this post isn’t going to be about educating you on this matter, it’s going to be about how delicious these wines are. If you are looking for more information on why all wines aren’t vegan, please take a look at this article from Peta.
Proudly Vegan are on a mission to prove delicious wine does not require any type of animal product to be used in the production process and I completely agree!
I love their simple and straight forward branding – it stands out, shouting what the product is all about and makes finding wines for vegans so much easier. Not all stores mark which wines are vegan which can be a pain. I think the brand name will also make people question why the hell wine isn’t vegan and which animal products go into the process – I know in my non-vegan days I would have questioned it!
Now, onto the wines.
In the Sauvignon Blanc, the tasting notes were described as “zesty and refreshing with tropical fruit flavours of gooseberry, passion fruit and hints of mouth-watering fresh lime.“
I could really taste the lime and thought it was great – a very light and refreshing wine. I’ve really been enjoying having this with dinner and my favourite dish to have it with has been a warm broccoli salad – yum! Obviously I am not a wine expert so I could be completely wrong about this pairing, but I liked it!
On the bottle, the Food Matching options are stated as “risotto made with peas, green beans, or asparagus, pasta with lemon and garlic, or with mushrooms, or cauliflower braised with coriander and ginger or a herby salad.“
The second option that Proudly Vegan have to offer is a Merlot. The tasting notes in this bottle were described as having “intense fruit flavours of cherry and plum intertwined with sumptuous aromas of coffee and chocolate.” I loved this bottle too. Although rich, as described, I found this surprisingly easy to drink, where as some red wines are just too much for me.
Along with slurping on this gorgeous wine, I used it in a spaghetti bolognese too which worked very well, making an already delicious dish have an extra element. I am looking forward to purchasing this one again and perhaps making some sort of stew with it or using it to create a rich risotto with some mock meats.
I can’t wait to see what else Proudly Vegan have got coming up and cannot recommend these two wines enough. Currently, they can be purchased on Ocado and Amazon so hop to it and get tasting!
