Based in Peckham Rye, family-run Bánh Bánh serve up authentic Vietnamese cuisine including delicious vegan options which are clearly marked.
One aspect of dining out which I find very helpful is when restaurants have menus online with vegan options clearly marked, this makes my dining experiences more relaxing and enjoyable. I absolutely hate being ‘that vegan’ who has to ask for a vegan option at the time of dining in a place where they may have none.
Peckham Rye is a hub for delicious eateries and pubs/bars galore – Bánh Bánh didn’t disappoint! The restaurant was buzzing and excitable and although it was this way, it didn’t mean we had to rush our food and get out of there, staff allowed us plenty of time to chill and sip on cocktails. The dining experience was great, the food came quickly, the staff were friendly and the drinks were lovely! (Try the Lychee Long Time – stolichnaya vodka, lychee puree, raspberries, lemon thyme, fresh lemon juice, soda)
For starters I shared the tofu spring rolls and the BBQ aubergine which was insane. I love aubergine but have never eaten it like this. The smokey BBQ flavour was so intense and the peanuts on top added the perfect amount of crunch to the soft aubergine.
For my main I was torn between the Bun Noodle Salad (noodle salad with paddy field herbs, vermicelli noodles, pickles, cucumber, topped with shallots, peanuts & tofu) and the Bánh Khot Pancakes (mini turmeric & coconut pancakes topped with spring onion & tofu). In the end I fancied something warm so went for the pancakes but will definitely be going back to try the noodle salad soon as my friend ordered it and it looked great!
The pancakes were amazing. Served in a piping hot skillet, we were told how to eat these – Wrap them up in the salad leaves with some herbs from the basket and dip them in the soy sauce – Lush! This dish was so flavoursome, the freshness of the salad worked so well with the strong flavours of the pancakes and soy. I am absolutely in love with this dish and can’t wait to go back and scoff it again.
Overall, what a fantastic experience – Amazing food and very friendly staff who were knowledgeable about the vegan options.
